Best Socks to Wear by Shoe Style
What socks to wear when you DON’T want to see them
As a millennial, I am all too familiar with no-show socks. Even today, with the obvious shoe and sock trend, there are specific shoes that frankly look better with no-show socks. Further, the high sock look is simply not for everyone. No matter the reason if you want discreet socks, these Amazon socks are a great option.
The best no show socks stay in place! Is there anything worse than a sock sliding off of your ankle throughout the day? I wear no show socks when my ankle I want an exposed ankle with certain sneakers, boat style shoes, loafers, and other low cut shoes.
What socks to wear with trainer sneakers
Of all the shoes with socks combinations, this is the shoe style you can explore different types of socks with. Trainer sneakers have a chunkier body shape to them and look great styled with no-show socks, full coverage ankle socks, or tall socks.
This blog post covers several outfit ideas for styling trainer sneakers. You’ll see there how versatile trainers are when it comes to socks. My personal favorite look is to wear trainer sneakers with tall socks and leggings. This is a modern styling choice and looks so chic, plus it keeps your ankles warm!
Socks to wear with court sneakers
If you have been following this blog for the last few years, you are likely familiar with court sneakers. I share them all the time! They are extremely versatile, making them a great addition to any wardrobe style. Whether you are pairing court sneakers with a dress or jeans, my #1 recommended sock is a low profile ankle sock. Another sock option is a no-show sock, as seen in my outfit below!
With the white ankle socks, they are higher cut than no-show so you do see a trace of the sock but it blends in seamlessly with a classic white court sneaker!
What socks to wear with chelsea boots
Chelsea boots come in all different shapes and styles, from the classic black rainboot to the chunk platform combat boot. Whatever the style, I recommend wearing tall socks with your chelsea boots!
This post demonstrates how to style this popular boot style. I honestly wear these boots three seasons out of the year and grab these white socks or these neutral socks the most!
The perfect socks to wear with loafers
This one is up for debate! With the evolution of how to wear shoes with socks, the hottest style right now is to wear tall white socks scrunched down with loafers. It is a bold look and when done right it can be really cute. However, it just doesn’t look right when I try it. So let’s look at alternatives to the tall white socks with loafers:
- Tall dress socks
- White crew ruffle socks
- no show socks
Socks to wear with clogs
Back in the early 2000’s, I would never dream of wearing socks with clog style shoes. Today, socks are a must. You can try to coordinate the sock color with your outfit, or you can stick to a solid white sock. Some of my favorite socks to wear with clogs are tall white socks scrunched down, ruffle crew socks, or striped tube socks shown below.
Socks for suede slipper boots and ankle boots
Similar to clogs, I love to wear taller socks with suede boots. Another option is to wear low profile ankle socks, as shown below. Tall socks lend a modern and also casual vibe, while ankle socks feel less casual. Therefore, you can choose a sock to match the vibe you are going for.
The best socks for flats and mary jane shoes
This past year, we saw a lot of hype around mary jane and mesh style flats. If you want to wear socks with these types of shoes, but want it to look as though you are not wearing any, then no-show socks are a must! Pick a color that is most similar to your skin tone!
The other major trend that emerged alongside Mary Jane shoes was wearing tall socks with flats! I have also seen a lot of outfits styled with sheer dress socks, like the ones shown below. These would be great to wear with trouser shorts, skirts, dresses and ankle pants.
Shoes that Don’t Require Socks
While everyone has their own unique style preferences, I personally avoid wearing socks with sandals, slingbacks, dressy mules, and open toe shoes.
